3:AM Top 5: Chris Killen

3:AM’s fiction editor Chris Killen, whose ‘untitled (supermarket nightmare)’ is featured in the current issue of Dazed and Confused, has landed a two-book deal with Canongate. The first novel, The Bird Room, a “strangely merry look at the agony of true love”, will be published in 2009. You can read more about it here, and Chris’s stories ‘You and Helena’ and ‘Eyebrows’ right here in 3:AM. To celebrate, Chris shares his Top 5 tunes (in no order).

“We’ll Make a Lover of You” – Les Savy Fav: I would like to somehow live inside this song. It sounds like a fun place to be. I imagine strange Tron-shaped things in there, and icicles, and neon lights.

“Give Paris One More Chance” – Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers: I love how sincere Jonathan Richman is. If I was ever going to go out dancing, I would like to go out dancing with him.

“Black Like Me” – Spoon: Spoon are heroic and talented. This song comes from an album I like a lot and can’t stop playing. It is my favourite one on the album.

“Born to Run” – Bruce Springsteen: This song makes me feel dramatic and macho and ridiculous. It makes me want to roll up the sleeves of a tight white T-shirt and dismantle the engine of a Cadillac.

“Diminish Me, NYC” – Frankie Sparo: Frankie Sparo sounds perpetually ‘doomed’. This song sounds like a tourism-induced panic attack. The crashing drum sound at the end makes me feel excited.
