Aesthetics: For Robert Long

The lines of order
in your mind
were not confined to finity:
the sorting of resources.

The arts you set upon
with subtle passions
flow from abstract mappings
where intellect bisects the senses.

You watched between the pauses
of De Kooning’s brush strokes
as he turned to chat
granting access to the moment.

That was your aesthetic
the skill of weighing
gems by candle light
as we watched outside the window.

There is adherence to place
catching Pollock when the rose
exploded in his face.
Purveyor of gracious artifacts.

The beauty of comprehension.
Now you leave us with
all the abstract
nouns as they come down
to hold your hands.
