A review of 3:AM London, New York, Paris, edited by Andrew Stevens, appears in this month’s Flux magazine:
3:AM LONDON, NEW YORK, PARIS
ANDREW STEVENS (ED) (SOCIAL DISEASE)This anthology of 30 micro-narratives gives a fragmented vision of the eponymous triptych of cities. Derived from the 3:AM website, devoted to giving a voice to emerging short story writers, the collection brings together rookies and established authors such as Chris Cleave, Niven Govinden and Toby Litt. Scenarios range from a pseudo-religious epiphany in South London, through the hookers of Les Halles, to a man playing Shoot The Freak on Coney Island. The quality of the writing varies radically but, as a whole, these leave the impression of a series of a gritty snapshots of some indistinguishable city - a decadent, seedy and unforgiving international metropolis in which any hope for salvation lies far outside its borders.
