Subtitled ‘The Last Days of the British Underground 1978 – 1988′ and examining the “dark flowering of creativity which took shape in the UK”, The Secret Public runs at the ICA until May 6. Curated by, inter alia, Michael Bracewell and featuring Jon Savage, the exhibition charts the period from punk and Derek Jarman to style culture and the emergence of the YBAs, prior to the establishment of an “environment in which ‘alternative’ culture could immediately be co-opted into the mainstream.”

As if to prove the last point, Throbbing Gristle will appear at Tate Modern on May 26 to celebrate the work of Derek Jarman.
