Shrigley in Mono

“I didn’t invent crap drawing.”

David Shrigley (Will Self once said, “in some bizarre future one could imagine a vast keyboard and on each key a Shrigley image, all ready for one to type out Shrigleyish”) is launching What the Hell Are You Doing?: The Essential David Shrigley at Glasgow’s Mono on September 23. The low-down:

David will play an exclusive DJ set and show some of his best animations, as well as signing copies of the book. A golden ticket will be hidden inside one copy on the night, allowing one lucky fan to win the original artwork from the launch poster. There will also be a rare performance by Correcto, one of David’s favourite bands, featuring Franz Ferdinand’s Paul Thomson and Turner Prizewinner Richard Wright.

David talked about the book recently to The Skinny:

It’s primarily an anthology of my work over the last 18 to 19 years – a greatest hits if you will. Although my idea of what constitute greatest hits tends to differ quite wildly from what other people see. There’s some new work in there and there’s also some unseen stuff collected from things I did for the Guardian. And some other stuff that’s been published in very limited edition books that haven’t been seen very much. There are some sculptural works and also sort of odd photographs of things that I’ve made. It’s quite a mixture, and we spent quite a long time producing it to make sure that it looks nice, nicer than all my other books which are sometimes a little bit hastily rendered.

Mono, 12 Kings Court, Glasgow, 23rd September @ 8pm / Free but ticketed (limited to 4 per person)
