CUTTING-EDGE LITERARY NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBAL VILLAGE

Paul Ash from Sniffy Linings wrote to me the other day: "Most of the world thinks Americans are behind this invasion which isn't the case, there are constant demonstrations in cities across the country, thousands of people have been arrested, and riot police with rifles are a common sight all over -- it's as if martial law has been initiated without being declared." Paul has set up an extraordinary "resource hub for alternative media regarding the US invasion of Iraq and other tragic crimes". It's updated daily and includes, among many other things, the pictures of victims the Anglo-American media is trying to ignore. The war has also spawned several warblogs like Identity Theory's or the Command Post. Salam Pax's Baghdad blog is obviously attracting a great deal of attention. Ex Lemonhead Evan Dando hits back at Bush. Read Richard Hell's letter to Bush: ". . . You are leading us, the United States, further into becoming the deeply feared threat to world peace that the terrorists portray us as being. I believe you are succeeding at this by your misrepresentation to Americans of the world political reality. It appears to me that you are behaving as a demagogue in a government that you wish to be a plutocracy. Attacking Iraq in the way you are doing it -- without persuasive evidence of the danger that country represents to us, but by using whatever rhetorical means your speechwriters can devise to justify your pre-existing determination to conquer that country -- will create rather than eleminate terrorists who will plot against the U.S." Charlotte Cooper's article on Iraq is also spot-on: "I feel a total, suffocating, outrage at the war. It is making me ill with impotent rage. . . . Every day something disgusting happens that is more disgusting than the disgusting thing that happened yesterday. I didn't know that this much disgust could exist in the world. Some people really love war." Download Mute magazine's 15-minute video on the thousands of English children who bunked off school and demonstrated spontaneously when the war broke out.
