{"id":102385,"date":"2021-03-04T16:34:57","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T16:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/?p=102385"},"modified":"2021-03-23T13:28:19","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T13:28:19","slug":"seal-club-furies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/seal-club-furies\/","title":{"rendered":"Seal Club Furies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Koushik Banerjea.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-102386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/815IaC2xOGL-e1614874926277.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"518\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Alan Warner, Irvine Welsh and John King, <em>The Seal Club<\/em> (London Books, 2020)<\/p>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E87\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E88\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">There<\/span><span id=\"E89\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E90\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s a row going on down near Slough, and there<\/span><span id=\"E91\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E92\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s several breaking out on the pages of this three<\/span><span id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E94\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">novella collection, the latest offering from the idiosyncratic London Books imprint.<\/span><span id=\"E95\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E96\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">(Alan)<\/span><span id=\"E97\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E98\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Warner, (Irvine)<\/span><span id=\"E99\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E100\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Welsh, (John)<\/span><span id=\"E101\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E102\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">King, the clue right there in the acronym <\/span><span id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E104\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">WWK, more than a hint of tag team wrestling or reunified boxing codes about it.<\/span><span id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E106\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">And if that harks back to a 1970s past of <\/span><span id=\"E107\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E108\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">World of Sport<\/span><span id=\"E109\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E110\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, then these stories are also peopled by ghosts <\/span><span id=\"E111\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E112\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">of younger lives, the dying embers of an analogue culture, or even of a doomed sectarian folklore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E113\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"E114\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">#<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">In remembrance of things past, here<\/span><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s the ghost of Balti, in John King<\/span><span id=\"E119\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E120\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s <\/span><span id=\"E121\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E122\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The Beasts of Brussels<\/span><span id=\"E123\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E124\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, the Headhunter with his head blown off, still missed by his spar, Harry, running the gauntlet across Germany with some of the old hands from the hooligan heyday of <\/span><em><span id=\"E125\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The Football Factory<\/span><span id=\"E126\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, <\/span><span id=\"E127\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Headhunters<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E128\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E129\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">and <\/span><em><span id=\"E130\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">England Away<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E131\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">. Harris, Carter, Tommy Johnson: likely lads who are no longer lads but still doing their best to push the limits of tolerance, rowing with locals, and offering their own lager-soaked reverie for a Continent undergoing seismic change. It<\/span><span id=\"E132\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E133\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s <em>England Away<\/em> redux, the prelude to the upcoming Belgium-England fixture in Brussels, and this time the encounter is lent added spice by the tribal suture of Brexit, its repercussions still being absorbed across the Eurozone, and in English hearts. Gentle giant and avid England fan, Pat, has just had a serious kicking at the hands of some locals, which would have been even worse but for the timely intervention of his pals. Yet the appetite for violence is by no means limited to the skirmishing hooligans. King develops a common thread which runs through much of his work, namely that violence, whether between tribes, cultures or even across species, is cynically exploited for profit and political advantage by both the media and political classes. Such that here its extractive value, beyond the occasional moment of catharsis at the coal face, resides with those warping the telos and peddling the outrage, namely unscrupulous journalists and their employers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E134\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E135\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E136\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E137\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Football hooligans were good earners for publishers and journalists alike.<\/span><span id=\"E138\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E139\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E140\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Of course the moral outrage cuts both ways, further unsettling the tabloid stereotype of the mindless thug. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E141\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E142\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E143\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E144\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">A plate of harissa-heavy stew was better than all that French muck <\/span><span id=\"E145\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E146\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">the dead horses, snails, foie-gras. Fucking horrible cunts force-feeding ducks until their livers exploded then eating the mess. You had to be a perv to think that one up. He was no vegan, but the people responsible deserved a bullet in the head.<\/span><span id=\"E147\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E148\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E151\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">There are shades of <\/span><em><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Repo Man<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E153\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, even Len Deighton about this tale, with a <\/span><span class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">subplot involving the mysterious pickup of unspecified merch, whilst centre stage is taken up by a whirligig of nightmarish headlines <\/span><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E155\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Stone Island, Brexit, Salafists, Molenbeek.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E157\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E158\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E159\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Fact and fiction were easily conflated. News was entertainment after all.<\/span><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E161\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E163\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">In the end this carousel has much the same effect as those Trappist beers that Matt, the bag man, tries, and fails, to stay away from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E167\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">It<\/span><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E170\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s my round. Trust me, it will blow your fucking head off!<\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E172\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">King gets behind the double standards which go with the Dubbel.<\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The narrative offers no saccharin resolution, casual racism interchangeable with conviviality as the beer flows and the blood thickens. But this is writing which gets past the headlines, the manufactured outrage, leaving you in little doubt that some people are cunts while others (Pat) are innocents abroad. It is storytelling that seems to intrinsically understand the classic John Stuart Mill paradox, that of being <\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">a democrat in my own country, a despot in someone else<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s.<\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">And it<\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s razor-sharp, this tale, but it would still rather share a pint than slice you to ribbons. Truth to power. Double trouble, triple filtered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">#<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E188\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E189\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Patterned jumpers, mince pies, gift-giving, the cozy, fireside glow of one too many sherries as the clan settles down in front of the telly to hear what Queenie<\/span><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s got to say about another <\/span><em><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">annus horribilis<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">. Or perhaps not. This, after all, is the festive four-to-the-floor in Irvine Welsh<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s <\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The Providers<\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E199\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">. Christmas chez Begbie, he of <\/span><em><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Trainspotting<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">fame, and the only charade taking place is of a happy family, which, in true Tolstoyan fashion, this most certainly is not. Terminally ill family matriarch, Val, might be <\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">running out of real estate<\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">but if it<\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s one last happy gathering she<\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s hoping for, she<\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s right out of luck. The clan is as <\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">radge<\/span><span id=\"E217\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">as ever, bitter sibling rivalries on show as <\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">the peeve<\/span><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">flows and inhibitions are lowered. Her younger son, Frank, nowadays missing the vowel but very little else, is keen to flaunt his new-fangled happiness in front of the slightly disbelieving clan. Or is this just another charade? The career criminal now apparently <\/span><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">reformed<\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, following his latest stint inside, via the love of a good woman and his burgeoning career as a successful artist. He seems <\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">fit, tanned, carefree<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, is teetotal by choice and now listens to Bach and Mahler, rather than Rod Stewart, in his studio. His sister, Elspeth, whose house is the venue for this gathering, is finding his smugness insufferable. She has worked hard for the happy marriage, nuclear family, and petit-bourgeois trappings she now enjoys, and which are a reminder to her of how far she has travelled in one sense from the housing <\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">scheme<\/span><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> where she, where they all, grew up.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E235\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-2 qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"><\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Frank<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s successful reinvention as an in-demand, newly minted artist, after a lifetime of violent crime, appears to mock the respectability his sister has striven so hard to achieve. And tensions only continue to rise after her other brother, Joe, arrives at the house already the worse for wear, subsequently antagonises everyone present, before being shepherded away by Frank to an uncertain fate in the snow. The peeve is its own Molotov cocktail, ruthlessly exposing every fissure and crack in the Begbie social fabric. Though to be fair, Joe<\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s already in a bad way, resembling a <\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">mirthless Department Store Father Christmas.<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Even Val briefly livens up, holding court on the Tories, the NHS, and Tony Blair: <\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">He hud the mooth ay a hoor. A cocksucker<\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s mooth!<\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">But she too is haunted by ghosts, of police raids, Christmases past, and of <\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">a bitter and futile legacy in the service of violent alcoholic males<\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">. Welsh has his say too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The marginal in society were not exempt from the crippling disease of narcissism that now polluted all aspects of our culture and politics.<\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><\/em><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">At other times his disdain is palpable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">What was so special about fucking America? Why no press outcry when we had their stuff foisted on us, yet there was this constant obsession with Europe and Brussels controlling our lives?<\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">All that peeve and inevitably it ends in violence, recrimination and a shocking revelation. <\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Another Christmas ruined!<\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">It<\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s Pinteresque, as if the careworn remnants of Abigail<\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s Party were now mainlining absinthe. Or maybe it<\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s Frank Capra made to dine with Otto Dix, so that in an instant the bonhomie evaporates. <\/span><span id=\"E282\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E283\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Just one click. This is the internet age.<\/span><span id=\"E284\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">#<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E288\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">And of course there<\/span><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s always a moment before, predating the digital slump. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">This was still the blessed era before computers and mobile phones filled our hands forever.<\/span><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E298\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E299\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">But there are ghosts aplenty here too, some even lurking in the nomenclature. Slorach, Fossenkemper, Lorimer. Key figures in Alan Warner<\/span><span id=\"E300\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E301\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s <\/span><span id=\"E302\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E303\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Those Darker Sayings<\/span><span id=\"E304\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E305\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">whose names seem to belong to a fast disappearing world <\/span><span id=\"E306\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E307\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">anti-establishment, <\/span><span id=\"E308\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> \u00e9<\/span><span id=\"E309\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">migr<\/span><span id=\"E310\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> \u00e9<\/span><span id=\"E311\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, and, oh Christ, Leeds United! The ghost of Revie rippling the surface with a hint perhaps of violence-to-come. Lorimer, that name alone, an irruption from an earlier era, when legend has it that men were men, and machines followed suit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E312\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E314\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E315\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The story follows the efforts of a crack team of machinists <\/span><span id=\"E316\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E317\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">pub quiz <\/span><span class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">machine addicts <\/span><span id=\"E318\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E319\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">attempting to monetise their addiction while slaking their thirst for pubs and the free rail travel which is a perk of their status as British Rail employees, albeit disgruntled ones. Like Lorimer they have all eschewed the rat race<\/span><span id=\"E320\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E321\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E322\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">back in<\/span><span id=\"E323\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E324\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">some undisclosed era<\/span><span id=\"E325\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E326\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">which turns out to be the early 1990s. Gazza<\/span><span id=\"E327\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E328\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s tears, <\/span><span id=\"E329\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">perestroika<\/span><span id=\"E330\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, all that jazz. But in their <\/span><span id=\"E331\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">air of abstraction and mathematical exactness<\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E334\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> there is also something of the trainspotter, the nerd, the vinyl junkie. They are largely cast-offs from the unspoken <\/span><span id=\"E335\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E336\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">caste<\/span><span id=\"E337\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E338\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">system operating on the railways, with drivers as de facto Brahmins and everyone else filling subsidiary roles. Lennox is a <\/span><span id=\"E339\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E340\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">shunter<\/span><span id=\"E341\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E342\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">not a driver, though Fossenkemper hilariously keeps mishearing his designation as <\/span><span id=\"E343\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E344\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">fluffer<\/span><span id=\"E345\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E346\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">. But the group is spearheaded by timetabling guru Slorach, whose plan is to pool their intellectual resources and soon have the <\/span><span id=\"E347\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E348\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Thirst of Knowledge machines spitting out the fifties like a Gatling gun.<\/span><span id=\"E349\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E350\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E351\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">And for a while they even prosper before Head Office of the quiz game manufacturer cottons on and presses the reset button, in one fell swoop stymying both the payouts and the mental payoffs from these gentle, if assiduously compiled, acts of subversion. For the narrator, Lennox, this marks the end of his brief flirtation with the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E352\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E354\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E355\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The analogue world is fast disappearing, replaced by the cool, corporate algorithm, designed to be <\/span><span id=\"E356\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E357\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">failsafe<\/span><span id=\"E358\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E359\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E360\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E361\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Much to his chagrin, Lennox notices how this computer-generated approach to a <\/span><span id=\"E362\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E363\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">standardised<\/span><span id=\"E364\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E365\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">outcome starts to percolate into other areas of life too. <\/span><span id=\"E366\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E367\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Extra-cold Guinness, too quickly poured <\/span><span id=\"E368\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E369\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">that<\/span><span id=\"E370\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E371\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s when you know it<\/span><span id=\"E372\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E373\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s all gone to shit.<\/span><span id=\"E374\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E375\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">It<\/span><span id=\"E376\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E377\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s hard not to think of Magnus Mills<\/span><span id=\"E378\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E379\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">1998 novel <\/span><em><span id=\"E380\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">The Restraint of Beasts<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E381\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> at such moments, or in this story<\/span><span id=\"E382\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E383\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s tragicomic unravelling, and in its paean to a warmer, older, more disruptive analogue sociality. Dissident pursuits, like the <\/span><span id=\"E384\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E385\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">gaming<\/span><span id=\"E386\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E387\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">of the (pub quiz machine) game, turn out to be not-so-trivial. The societal shift this story monitors, from analogue to computerised, ultimately proves disastrous for leftfield refuseniks like John Robert Slorach, pinpointing a steady decline into online gambling, debt, mental illness, and finally self-annihilation. Lennox, <\/span><span id=\"E388\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E389\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">appalled by the frugality of his own needs<\/span><span id=\"E390\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E391\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, manages to move on. But he knows he<\/span><span id=\"E392\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E393\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s one of the lucky ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E394\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E395\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E396\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E397\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">We didn<\/span><span id=\"E398\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E399\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">t really acknowledge many things back in my early adulthood. Male mental health, depression, even the idea that you could be addicted to things other than drugs.<\/span><span id=\"E400\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"E401\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E403\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E404\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">As with a dramatic upheaval like <\/span><span id=\"E405\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">perestroika<\/span><span id=\"E406\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">, the shift from analogue to digital, happening at more or less the same time, albeit in a very different locale, seemed to unhinge something within the societies they affected. And whilst there were clearly winners in this zero-sum game<\/span><span id=\"E407\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> \u2013<\/span><span id=\"E408\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\"> the oligarchs, spivs and political opportunists who accelerated the death throes of an earlier social <\/span><span id=\"E409\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E410\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">contract<\/span><span id=\"E411\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; \u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E412\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">many more lost out, their fiscal instincts and moral calculus yo-yoing wildly up and down <\/span><span class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">the class ladder, until, for some, like the unfortunate Slorach, <\/span><span id=\"E413\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E414\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">only that final night schedule was left for him.<\/span><span id=\"E415\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E416\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-2\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"E417\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">#<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E418\" class=\"qowt-stl-Body x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E419\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Taken together, this triptych will make you groan, laugh, wince, think aloud and perhaps even reach across your own idiomatic aisle. Like Francis Bacon<\/span><span id=\"E420\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216;<\/span><span id=\"E421\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">s <\/span><span id=\"E422\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E423\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">Furies<\/span><span id=\"E424\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">&#8216; <\/span><span id=\"E425\" class=\"qowt-font10-TimesRoman\">there are moments when these tales are bent out of shape, by history, or by the sheer cumulative weight of their own melancholy. But then someone will stand a round, or Frank Begbie will fleetingly renounce violence, or Fossenkemper issue an unexpected sexual directive, and a more fluid commons will once more find its feet. These stories are funny, sad, maddening, and beautifully crafted. Read them and weep, drink, argue, exhale. But read them. Nothing wrong with a row.
