How you were forever<br \/>\nat rehearsal, trying on these new skins and masks,<\/p>\n<p>trying out turns of phrase: head tilted just so,<br \/>\nhands held thus. How even now you go on studying<br \/>\nthese strange people, this race, this species<br \/>\namong which you do not fit and will never belong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traveling Light<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are all guests in the language;<br \/>\narrive at the border with<br \/>\nold schoolbooks, vaccination cards, comics<br \/>\nwhose panels are drawn at strange angles.<\/p>\n<p>How will you support yourself<br \/>\nwhile in our country? the guard asks.<br \/>\n<em>Is this your first visit?<\/em><br \/>\nI will be earning American dollars<\/p>\n<p>while here, one visitor answers. I offer<br \/>\nthis letter of credit from my bank<br \/>\nin Argentina, another explains.<br \/>\n<em>Once before here I have been.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These all seem to you good answers.<br \/>\nNow it is your turn. <em>Words,<br \/>\nprotect me!<\/em> And if not words,<br \/>\nthen all the possible misunderstandings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Little Sister<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is what my life comes to, then. Ten yearsittle Sister<br \/>\nof moving things from hamper to hanger<br \/>\nand back, excuses to your mother and mine on the phone,<br \/>\ndaytime TV. And not once<br \/>\ndid I take up your time unless I had to,<br \/>\nwhen Father died, when Lauren refused to wake up<br \/>\nin the hospital. You were always in Germany<br \/>\nor in seclusion, or at a meeting; your time<br \/>\nwas important, and your life. When we spoke,<br \/>\nit was as though by notes<br \/>\nthrown between windows opened for their passage<br \/>\nand quickly closed, windows against which,<br \/>\nafterwards, I would place my hand,<br \/>\nfinding what comfort I could in the warmth of the glass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what corner of morning<br \/>\nDid you encounter that horror of dawn<br \/>\nBreaking on the panes<\/p>\n<p>When walls turned to chalk<br \/>\nAnd lights came yellow behind windows<\/p>\n<p>What was it you bent<br \/>\nTo pick up from the walk and the sea<br \/>\nA shell lamenting some used-up life<\/p>\n<p>What have you carried home inside you<br \/>\nFrom the bank of morning<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding Home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now at last you can set down<br \/>\nthe luggage of the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Its place is here, after all, here<br \/>\nwhere years ago you wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Bus pulls into station, my suitcase<br \/>\nentering first your nation,<br \/>\nthis new content and continent.<\/p>\n<p>Now at last you can unpack<br \/>\nthe luggage of the heart,<br \/>\nroll up and put away<br \/>\nthese ill-fitting clothes,<\/p>\n<p>this loose second skin<br \/>\ntoo long lived in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT THE AUTHOR<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grasslimb.com\/sallis\">James Sallis<\/a> has written some two dozen books including twelve novels (six of these in the critically acclaimed Lew Griffin series), three books of musicology, a biography of Chester Himes, and multiple collections of stories, poems and essays, as well as translating Raymond Queaneau&#8217;s novel <em>Saint Glinglin<\/em>.
