Who were the ones you looked up to?<\/p>\n<p><b>John Fante:<\/b> Well <b>Sherwood Anderson<\/b>. [pause] <b>Knut Hamsun<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>BP:<\/b> That&#8217;s interesting. One of <b>Bukowski<\/b>&#8216;s favorites, too.<\/p>\n<p><b>JF:<\/b> Is that right? The curious thing about my admiration for Knut Hamsun is it brought me quite a lot of trouble when I joined the Guild in 1938 because \u2013<\/p>\n<p><b>BP:<\/b> Because of his politics.<\/p>\n<p><b>JF:<\/b> Yeah, because of his politics. And I knew nothing about Hamsun&#8217;s politics, and I&#8217;m glad I didn&#8217;t know, otherwise I never would&#8217;ve read his marvelous works.<\/p>\n<p><b>BP:<\/b> It&#8217;s kind of a shame because he was an old man when he did that and they dumped all that crap on him.<\/p>\n<p><b>JF:<\/b> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><b>BP:<\/b> Another writer that Bukowski admires is <b>C \u00e9line<\/b>. Of course there&#8217;s a tremendous hated of him, too, but he&#8217;s still a helluva good writer.<\/p>\n<p><b>JF:<\/b> Yes, I like C \u00e9line, too. C \u00e9line is a marvelous writer.<\/p>\n<p><b>BP:<\/b> Did you have anything you were trying to prove when you started out as a writer in Los Angeles as a novelist?<\/p>\n<p><b>JF:<\/b> No, no.
