\ngarlic, rats and beards. Synagogues by torchlight
\nand now I’ve got the nerve to be
\nat frayed edges over insignificant shit. What might
\nan obese watcher in a lorgnette
\nhave to say? Our singers skinny and our spotlights
\ngolden. Better dress small complaints
\nin big scenery like:

\nBethlehem, or Atlantis
\nis just the tumbled upward leavings,
\nreef-like, of the pictures it corrected,
\nthe rough-hand, in red-pen
\nscrawling like a divorced
\nEnglish teacher (this is it?)
\nall over your ‘Traffic imagery
\nin The Great Gatsby: Wait for
\nthe Green Light.’
\nWhat’s he doing now? You swore
\nyou wouldn’t go down
\nlike your teachers or your father.
\nThe soft things that built
\nthe reefs of this world,
\nand the sphinx, are dead. They’ve left
\ntheir ‘afterword’s
\na house of bone and riddles.<\/p>\n
\nis a debt to grief
\nthen all the quiet among us
\nis just the inverse
\nof what we can’t afford to say.
\nIn the baselines
\nand breakdowns, the cold casings
\nof our sound-shrouded
\nhours are the seeds, short
\nthough their roots
\nreach, of all the speech
