can I?<\/p>\n<p>sometimes Easton Ave looks like<br \/>\na tunnel, or a runway, my<br \/>\nbreath the airy commerce btw<br \/>\nPizza City and the vengeful hand of<br \/>\nJehovah, like trying to find the<br \/>\ndifference btw the puke splattered<br \/>\nsidewalk and a burst of wild<br \/>\ntiger-lilies<\/p>\n<p>I wish the power lines really did hum,<br \/>\nthe remnant fields rolling like<br \/>\nfractured stormy seas, I wish<br \/>\nI were incarnate most of the time,<br \/>\nmilk-crates, ball courts, I hang<br \/>\nheavy on the bush like late-summer<br \/>\ntomatoes<\/p>\n<p>you say that you know me<br \/>\nisn&#8217;t this unfathomable, like<br \/>\nthe outer reaches of some temporal galaxy<br \/>\ndo you see my sputtering stars?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>purgatory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I want to attempt hallucinations<br \/>\nso I stare at my hand in the air over my face<br \/>\nuntil I wind up bored and forget what I ever wanted<br \/>\nhow I feel about you is a terrible thing to know<br \/>\nthe warm air, when you want to chase the rain<br \/>\nin the middle of a slow paved street with quiet<br \/>\nhouses like so many teeth, erupting like the stars<br \/>\nout of the spaces between trees, and<br \/>\nI want to lay in the street and look up there<br \/>\nbut I probably won&#8217;t<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>on stumbling over some indescribable emotion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lisbon sank down like a dream<br \/>\nevery empty can is an act of god<\/p>\n<p>brushing away light from the curtains<br \/>\nimagining waves to Guadalquivir<\/p>\n<p>some forty thousand suddenly<br \/>\na thought in a cold hotel room<\/p>\n<p>I taste cigarettes, whiskey sour<\/p>\n<p>the wedding caved in like a memory<br \/>\nin the best of all possible worlds<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>colossus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>this nights not worth the talk<br \/>\nan empanada, or a worry,<br \/>\ntwo cigarettes or a cavalcade of refills for my<br \/>\ntime-defying coffee,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re on empty at the stoplights (your dreams)<br \/>\nthat stand like a colossus at the harbor, or maybe<br \/>\nlike the egg of Columbus, or<br \/>\nyour delicate inability to make a point<br \/>\nand seem authentic in your excitement<br \/>\nfinally I&#8217;ve met Zionists<br \/>\nand swingset types, sheesha smoke<br \/>\nlike nebulae, or a swirl of half and half<br \/>\ndiluting in my eternal bitterness,<br \/>\nthat is,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve seen the avenue long-boarded,<br \/>\nshame-walked, and thought<br \/>\nthat still, the gods defy us<br \/>\nand you too, with that Rhodes in your heart<br \/>\nnot all things can be astride, and conquer<br \/>\nsimply with steps, and bronze, and slowly<br \/>\ncast ambition, the ground<br \/>\nlike running buffalo off a cliff<br \/>\nrumbles under the inevitable destiny that<br \/>\nyou somehow control and don&#8217;t and all of<br \/>\na sudden it&#8217;s 1964 and you never thought<br \/>\nold Harpo would die or at least<br \/>\nthere would be no sound<br \/>\nwhen he did it<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>seagulls float on the morning<br \/>\nthe garbage trucks tremble down<br \/>\nNew Brunswick&#8217;s tight streets<\/p>\n<p>and every day I destroy myself<br \/>\nmore often watching sparrows<br \/>\ndisappear the distance<\/p>\n<p>from the curb to the swaying power lines,<br \/>\njust like that, in one swift rise<\/p>\n<p>dogs bark down central<br \/>\npower lines wade into the<br \/>\ndistant noise<\/p>\n<p>fragile, like a mindset,<br \/>\nor an afternoon that shrinks down<br \/>\nto night<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>gone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>you are unreachable like a high score,<br \/>\nor mount Everest 100 years ago, maybe<br \/>\nless out of reach than dreams <\/p>\n<p>a phantom limb,<br \/>\nthe last, unopened beer<br \/>\nthe upper east side<br \/>\nor the moon, soho or shanghai,<br \/>\nyou are unimaginable <\/p>\n<p>I noticed, when you&#8217;re not around<br \/>\nthe way the moments echo<\/p>\n<p>I am scared that you<br \/>\nand the you in my head<br \/>\nwill be going their separate ways<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/danhoopespic.jpg\" alt=\"danhoopespic\" width=\"512\" height=\"332\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/danhoopespic.jpg 512w, https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/danhoopespic-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>ABOUT THE AUTHOR<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Dan Hoopes<\/strong> was born in 1988 and occasionally writes satire for The Medium at Rutgers.
