It&#8217;s swollen.<\/p>\n<p>When I visited you for the last time that Winter,<br \/>\nthe air was too dry and your skin flayed and fell.<br \/>\nYou didn&#8217;t want to go out and we spent the weekend making sure<br \/>\nall things were charged. You were still bad-mouthed.<br \/>\n&#8216;Fuck your audio faces!&#8217; you shouted to the smug-assed people on the radio,<br \/>\ntalking about pseudo-randomness and the predictability of chance.<\/p>\n<p>But I wanted Chinese food. I came all the way, I yelled.<br \/>\nFlorescent lights did not select faces. Chinatown, crowded, felt<br \/>\nempty. You demanded of the waiter: &#8220;Answer my Cantonese question<br \/>\nin Mandarin.&#8221; What the hell did that mean?<br \/>\nOn the way back, your belt broke on the train.<br \/>\nThe buckle pulled off like the head of a snake.<\/p>\n<p>Before I left, we had a farewell toast. It was hardly noon.<br \/>\nThere were raspberries in our vodka, and a slice of lime.<br \/>\nYou told me then that you were happy\u2014<br \/>\nNo more. You didn&#8217;t dread the day<br \/>\nwhen someone sitting behind you in a hospital gets annoyed<br \/>\nby a stray strand of white hair on your head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>to see the world<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;for Dorothee Lang<\/p>\n<p>If you had to choose<br \/>\nbetween traveling around the world in one day<br \/>\nand waiting for the train with me for five minutes,<br \/>\nwhich would you choose?<\/p>\n<p>To see the world in under two dawns,<br \/>\nbetter than a grain of sand.<br \/>\nIts rise &amp; decay in ruins \u2014 now tourist sites.<br \/>\nIts loving nothingness in city glass buildings\u2014<br \/>\nminiature Babel towers.<br \/>\nIf you are lucky, you&#8217;ll see ten wedding ceremonies,<br \/>\nfifteen births in baths,<br \/>\npeople yelping &amp; rising from Blowing Rock.<br \/>\nOn a remote village road, barefoot children grow or wane,<br \/>\nwhile daffodils beg for rain. Someone<br \/>\nin the East collects gutter oil for high-end restaurants.<br \/>\nYou see soldiers in war zones.
