Some may think the wave<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;has a grander geography.<\/p>\n<p>This I cannot promise.<br \/>\nI cannot promise much<\/p>\n<p>but today I can promise you<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;I am thinking maps made of sand,<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;certain a book is a kind of geography.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Last week Dave sent me his.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;I took it on a trip to Italy.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Italy is one of my geographies.<\/p>\n<p>You could say I read Dave&#8217;s book<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;with my Italian face and that face,<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;like Dave&#8217;s, has its own geography.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;I only ever see Dave&#8217;s face by mail;<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;his geography is that far from mine.<\/p>\n<p>Our geographies once crossed in Syracuse<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;where our adult maps were made<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;and cooling lava shaped the land.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;And like that we have cooled.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Now, we lie on sediment and silt.<\/p>\n<p>Dave&#8217;s book had me in a Syracuse<br \/>\nwhen I lost it in the men&#8217;s room and then<\/p>\n<p>it was gone and goodbye to all that<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;and this missing became important to me.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;For the next few months it was an omen<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;and if I stumbled and fell, if I cut my thumb<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;I would think of Dave&#8217;s book and how<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;it was a sandcastle collapsed in a wave.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After my wife leaves<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;I think of the book, cawing like a magpie.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;She will not promise but I know<\/p>\n<p>her geography is no longer mine<br \/>\nand I have a face she will only visit.<\/p>\n<p>And I am sure the book<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;has a new skin around it, the water of the book, the kiss<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;of the book has new desires and it left as my Syracuse face<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;has left and can only be found in mail and in the distance<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;of all the waves, all the shores<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;all the shores with no waves<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;all the waves with no shores<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;all the faces that have waved<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;at my shore.<\/p>\n<p>And the geographies only get bigger.<br \/>\nI promise, everyday the ocean is deeper.<\/p>\n<p>The geography of ice caps melting and<br \/>\nthe style of a sandcastle to stand.<\/p>\n<p>And I know how a lost geography can return:<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;the geography of a lost pendant, a lost wallet,<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;a love, the geography of her neck. I cannot promise<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;but this is not impossible except often you return<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;to an old geography with a new face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>III.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maps on top of maps on top of maps<br \/>\ntranslucent and inaccurate but<br \/>\na palimpsest nonetheless and all the time,<br \/>\nreading Dave&#8217;s book, I was in a Syracuse<br \/>\nwhere the ocean never arrived<br \/>\nand our faces never departed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Untitled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHow many times will you do this or that, \/ without being aware \/ of the time passing \/ or the time that still remains to you?&#8221; <\/em>Aleksandar Ristovic <\/p>\n<p>And it was only a corner<br \/>\nbut I turned it with more worry<br \/>\nthan normally I worry <\/p>\n<p>as if that corner<br \/>\nwas the year of my death<br \/>\nor a shadow of death <\/p>\n<p>which I&#8217;ve dreamed<br \/>\nsince I was a child<br \/>\nwatching street lamps<\/p>\n<p>dreaming of the day a car would forget<br \/>\nto stop or I&#8217;d forget to look. And this<br \/>\nwas only a corner, one <\/p>\n<p>of many on a round earth<br \/>\nand the shadows that pass<br \/>\nare only shadows of people <\/p>\n<p>waiting for the lights, checking<br \/>\ntheir watches or scanning<br \/>\nfor an acquaintance <\/p>\n<p>as I dream of my acquaintance<br \/>\nturning up, as if by surprise,<br \/>\nan expected surprise, sure <\/p>\n<p>as the lights twitch<br \/>\nback to green<br \/>\nafter a long red. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Opinions, Not Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I kiss the chauffeur<br \/>\nholding the wrong name<br \/>\naway like bloody offal<\/p>\n<p>I correct him with my mouth, I am so tired<br \/>\nof shadows and ink at airports and trains and all<br \/>\nthe bus stations. I didn&#8217;t have to rush to Bulgaria<\/p>\n<p>to be alone. I could have been alone with C.<br \/>\nor R. or anyone but H. If you had a full name<br \/>\nI could not be alone with you. G. would call<br \/>\nthis abstraction and H. would never call<br \/>\nthis a choice, she&#8217;d call these facts. I know facts:<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;1. I see other people kiss<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;see kisses while pedals are still<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;spinning &#8212; how he rushed<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;and the bike and the red bike fell.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;2. Tonight K. spoke hypothetical so well it could have been<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;German. We had hypothetical gestalt. I blame the bar<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;there was no electrics, only candles, the owner<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;so afraid of a shock, so fearless of fire. And K.<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;so serious about the squish and blast of us<br \/>\n&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;of course I had to  <\/p>\n<p>tell you how many hypotheticals I&#8217;ve ruined<br \/>\nor how many hotels and motels and inns<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve covered in dust. Hallways of frozen dust<br \/>\nup north, crocodile sheets down south, the tub<br \/>\nin Rome and all the nights in the motel of my own flat,<br \/>\nthe odd alone of my mother&#8217;s home.
