\nin the caf \u00e9 when I was single? That guilt-free day<\/p>\n
\non a tip-off from a mutual friend, then watched
\nthe familiar walls lose their shape, my heart
\nright there on the table, my coffee going cold.<\/p>\n
\nthe day the newspaper scandal picked up
\nsome momentum the plan had been
\nto look for rabbits when our ears pricked up \u2013
\nthe island has the biggest population
\nof wallabies outside Australia. Being free
\nfrom predators it took just one generation
\nto settle. Then, they continued to breed.<\/p>\n
\nIt was the lighthouse keeper’s cat behind
\nthe death of all the flightless birds, the story goes.
\nThey blamed the keeper, then the cat, and then
\nsaw the sparkle of feral eyes, shining
\nfrom under hundreds of hedgerows.<\/p>\n
\nin the corner of the field. The shutter speed
\nis set to twenty minutes, giving him the chance
\nto sit back and take in the lounging spread
\nof the evening where the stars will seem still
\nin the same place. He knows he’ll find exposed
\nconstellated traces, the beginning of a spiral,
\nthe black sky purpled once the shutter snaps closed.
\nHe says it hinges on the camera staying fixed
\nand leaving the subject time to move on.
\nHow focussing on infinity is a simpler trick.
\nMuch like the two of us, then, this three year long<\/p>\n
\nthe invisible differences, how you were capable
\nof carrying on without me noticing and how
\nmy almost-clear eye can’t resolve the details:
\nwork out for me to the closest millimetre
\nthe distance that develops a smile to a sneer.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/stephenconnolly.jpg\")
