Dark shades, everything mahogany and maroon, patterned stools and beer mats.<\/em><br \/>\nJOHN <em>and<\/em> SAM <em>sit either side of a cornered table in the back.<\/em><br \/>\nBOTH<em> have a full pint of lager before them. On the table also is an open packet of dry roasted nuts. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Moments pass whilst nothing is said.<\/em><br \/>\nSAM <em>lifts his pint, takes a swig and makes to begin conversation.<\/em><br \/>\nSAM:\tI heard what&#8217;s-his-name ended up missing his own stag. His passport was too tatty, apparently.<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[JOHN <em>puts his pint to his mouth and widens his eyes.<\/em>] I slept with Hannah.<br \/>\n[<em>He takes a swig of his drink and places it back on the table, casually taking some nuts from an open packet. <\/em>SAM <em>looks at <\/em>JOHN<em>, confused.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tJohn, are you joking?<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Lifting his pint to drink.<\/em>] No. I slept&#8230;<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Interrupting. Angry, sitting up.<\/em>] John, I think you should explain exactly what you&#8217;re inferring.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tWell, I slept with your wife. [JOHN <em>takes another sip.<\/em>] In a dream.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Relaxing.<\/em>] In a dream? Right. Ok, Ok. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] Why are you telling me this, John?<br \/>\n\t[JOHN <em>finishes chewing his nut, considers something, takes another sip.<\/em>]<br \/>\nJOHN:\tOf hers.<br \/>\n\t[JOHN <em>checks the length of his nails.<\/em> SAM <em>quizzically inspects<\/em> JOHN.]<br \/>\nSAM:\tWait. Let me get this. [<em>Pause. Accusingly.<\/em>] You slept with Hannah. [<em>Beat. Confused.<\/em>] In a dream. [<em>Beat. More confused.<\/em>] Of hers?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tYes. Essentially, yes.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Angry, sarcastic.<\/em>] Essentially? What unessential details have I missed?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tNot a dream. It&#8217;s been going on a while.<br \/>\n[SAM<em>, aghast, looks at<\/em> JOHN. JOHN <em>casually drinks his pint and continues to help himself to the nuts.<\/em> SAM <em>settles back down, takes a swig of his own drink and thinks<\/em>.]<br \/>\nSAM:\tI don&#8217;t know how to exactly deal with what you&#8217;re saying here, John.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHow&#8217;d you think I feel? [<em>Beat.<\/em>] I&#8217;m the one sleeping with her.<br \/>\nSAM:\tGood point.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tEvery night!<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Fingering his temples.<\/em>] Jesus, John.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tSometimes more than once. [<em>Beat.<\/em>] Most times. [<em>Sipping his pint.<\/em>] Insatiable woman.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Whistling.<\/em>] How&#8217;s Jayne taking it?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHow&#8217;d you expect? You know how jealous she is of other women.<br \/>\nSAM:\tTrue. [BOTH <em>finish their pints, <\/em>SAM <em>stands<\/em>] Another?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tIndeed.<br \/>\n[SAM <em>goes to the bar off stage. He returns momentarily with two fresh pints of lager, places one in front of<\/em> JOHN <em>and sits back down.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tYou&#8217;re sleeping with my wife.<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Nodding.<\/em>] Mmm.<br \/>\nSAM:\tYeah, it just kind of. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] Yeah. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] That&#8217;s a real corker, I mean.<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Interrupting.<\/em>] Hey, Sam, you know if I could help it.<br \/>\nSAM:\tOh no, John, John. I understand. [SAM <em>takes a sip of his drink.<\/em>] Though\u2026 could you not have\u2026 well\u2026 not have?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tOut of my control, Sammy Boy. Can&#8217;t help it. [<em>Sipping his lager.<\/em>] Nothing to be done.<br \/>\nSAM:\tHas it stopped now?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tAre you kidding? Christ, if only. Insatiable, as I say.<br \/>\nSAM:\tBut, you couldn&#8217;t just\u2026 not?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tNo can do.<br \/>\nSAM:\tNot even&#8230;<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Interrupting.<\/em>] Literally. I can&#8217;t stop it. [<em>Taking a swig.<\/em>] I mean [<em>Pause.<\/em>] I&#8217;m not even there, you know? It&#8217;s an impossible situation for me. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] Believe me, if I could.<br \/>\nSAM:\tYou&#8217;re right, you&#8217;re right. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] Still.<br \/>\n\t[BOTH <em>sit in silence, concentrating on their drinks.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tShe, er?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tRelentlessly. [<em>Beat.<\/em>] Like she lives on \u2018em.<br \/>\nSAM:\tAnd she let&#8217;s you&#8230;<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Interrupting.<\/em>] There isn&#8217;t one I haven&#8217;t been.<br \/>\nSAM: \t[<em>Interrupting.<\/em>] In a way I blame myself.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tYou shouldn&#8217;t.<br \/>\nSAM:\tI know, but I do. I can&#8217;t help it.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tYou&#8217;re probably right.<br \/>\n\t[SAM <em>looks at<\/em> JOHN <em>who just swigs his pint.<\/em>]<br \/>\nJOHN:\tOh! [<em>Excited.<\/em>] Did I tell you about Rodger and that hooker in Glasgow?<br \/>\nSAM:\tJohn, not to be funny mate but I still can&#8217;t quite get my head around this whole sleeping with my wife issue. [<em>Pause.<\/em>] I don&#8217;t mean to be a stickler but\u2026 [SAM <em>swigs from his pint.<\/em>]<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHey look. It&#8217;s not the end of the world. I understand your [<em>beat<\/em>] hesitation, whatever \u2013 to move off the subject, but really mate [<em>Pause.<\/em> JOHN <em>swigs from his pint.<\/em>] It&#8217;s nothing to do with me.<br \/>\nSAM:\tBut you&#8217;re the one she&#8217;s having an affair with?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tYes, but [<em>beat<\/em>] you know\u2026 [JOHN <em>gestures with his hands like holding a hot potato.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tIt&#8217;s just some things are still playing on my mind.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tOf course, sorry. Look, I really think we should move off the topic but to ease your mind [JOHN <em>pats<\/em> SAM <em>on the shoulder twice.<\/em>] Any questions: ask away!<br \/>\nSAM:\tHow long has it actually been going on?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tMonths. Probably since [<em>Pause.<\/em>] September.<br \/>\nSAM:\tIt&#8217;s the second of October.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tSeptember last year.<br \/>\nSAM:\tThat&#8217;s years!<br \/>\nJOHN:\tTechnically only one, really. Not plural.<br \/>\nSAM:\tWho started it?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHer. Definitely her.<br \/>\nSAM:\tWhy?<br \/>\nJOHN: \tHey Sammy Boy. Come on now. That&#8217;s none of my business. You need to talk to Hannah, you know [<em>beat<\/em>] about her affairs.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Angrily before sipping from his pint.<\/em>] Oh I will.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tWell that&#8217;s settled. And good. I&#8217;m glad to see a couple ready to engage in dialogue. Too many couples these days run off the handle with conspiracy theories before they have all the facts and before they engage each other in meaningful, well-thought dialogue.<br \/>\n\t[SAM <em>stares down at the table, his chest heaving as he thinks hard.<\/em> JOHN <em>picks a nut from the packet and consults it thoroughly before placing it in the ashtray.<\/em>]<br \/>\nJOHN:\tSo Rodger. He&#8217;s in Glasgow and him and Dave and Mark and Ben, they&#8217;ve all been out on the booze and Rodger decides he&#8217;s going to go right ahead and get a Hooker! So off Rodger goes to find&#8230;<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Interrupting.<\/em>] You&#8217;re having an affair with my wife.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tIt&#8217;s her affair, Sam. If it were up to me\u2026well, you know, I would, I don&#8217;t want to bad mouth your wife &#8212; she&#8217;s a sexy woman, but I wouldn&#8217;t\u2026 you know\u2026 whilst you were still together.<br \/>\n\t[JOHN <em>sips his pint and his eyes wander around the pub.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tWhat am I going to say to her?<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Exclaiming.<\/em>] Dialogue, Sam! You&#8217;re already half there, I mean accepting you need to talk. [<em>Pause. Consults his watch.<\/em>] The women&#8217;ll be along in a minute anyhow.<br \/>\n\t[SAM <em>looks at his watch, his face winces up. He takes a final swig from the glass.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM: \tYour round.<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>Finishing his pint.<\/em>] Indeed. [JOHN <em>stands.<\/em>] I ought to get theirs in too. What&#8217;s Hannah have?<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>To the table.<\/em>] I would have thought you would know.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tNow come on, Sam. There&#8217;s no need to be like that.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Looking at<\/em> JOHN.] Sorry, sorry. It&#8217;s all a bit.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tI know. Look I&#8217;ll get these in and tell you about Rodge before they get here. It&#8217;ll cheer you up [<em>Chuckling to himself<\/em>] punching the pimp&#8217;s my favourite bit.<br \/>\n[JOHN <em>walks off stage laughing.<\/em> SAM <em>runs his finger around the top of his empty pint glass. The lights dim.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<h3>CURTAIN<\/h3>\n<h3>*<\/h3>\n<h3>ACT TWO<\/h3>\n<p><em>Moments later. Same pub. Same table.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alone, nudging his still empty pint glass sits<\/em> SAM.<br \/>\n<em>From right enters<\/em> HANNAH <em>and <\/em>JAYNE. <em>Dressed in gym gear, sweaters and tracksuit bottoms, they are all laughs.<\/em><br \/>\nSAM <em>looks up to them and the two women sit down,<\/em> JAYNE <em>on<\/em> SAM&#8217;s <em>left and<\/em> HANNAH <em>to his right, where<\/em> JOHN <em>was previously sat.<\/em><br \/>\nJAYNE:\tHey Sam, John at the bar?<br \/>\n\t[HANNAH <em>leans to<\/em> SAM <em>to kiss him on the cheek.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tHmmf. All kisses today are we?<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tOooh, is someone grumpy today.<br \/>\nSAM:\tI wouldn&#8217;t say \u2018grumpy&#8217;, more pissed off with my cheating whore of a wife.<br \/>\n[HANNAH <em>pulls back from<\/em> SAM <em>in shock.<\/em> JAYNE <em>grimaces.<\/em> JOHN <em>arrives at the table from left, awkwardly carrying two pints and two gin and tonics.<\/em>]<br \/>\nJOHN:\tEvening ladies. Gin and tonic for the darling wife. [JOHN <em>leans down to kiss<\/em> JAYNE.] The same for you Hannah. And a pint for Mr Sam here. [<em>He places down the other drinks and finally notices the shock on the faces of his three friends.<\/em>] Well who farted here then?<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tJohn, did you tell Sam about Hannah&#8217;s affair?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tYes. I thought we agreed it was the best idea.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tIt was darling, it&#8217;s ok, I thought as much.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\t[<em>Turning to<\/em> SAM, <em>leaning up to him.<\/em>] Is that why you called me a cheating whore of a wife?<br \/>\nSAM:\t\u2018Is that why I called you a cheating whore of a wife?&#8217; Is that why? Of course it&#8217;s fucking why. What else reason do I bloody well need?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tDialogue, Sam. Remember dia&#8230;<br \/>\nSAM:\tShut up, John.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tDon&#8217;t tell John to shut up, Sam. It&#8217;s not John&#8217;s fault.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tDarling, is that all. I thought it was something else.<br \/>\nSAM:\tIs that fucking all? [<em>To<\/em> JAYNE.] Your husband&#8217;s having an affair with my fucking wife, does that bother you, Jayne?<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tWhat tone! [<em>To<\/em> JOHN.] Did you explain it to him fully?<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tDarling, it&#8217;s just sex. You know like a fantasy. I love you; you know that.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tI thought I had.<br \/>\nSAM:\tJust sex\u2026 fantasy. Whatever you call it: you&#8217;re whoring yourself to my best friend.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHey, come now. Less of the whoring, but thanks for the heads up on the best friend accolade Sammy Boy, appreciate it! [SAM <em>breaks his stare on<\/em> HANNAH <em>to sneer at<\/em> JOHN.] But lets all calm down now, lets get some dialogue going.<br \/>\nSAM:\tIf he says dialogue one more time.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tI love you, Sam. I&#8217;ve only ever loved you. The thing with John is just\u2026 it&#8217;s like a hobby, something to do with yourself in the garden shed. Like you have your trains.<br \/>\nSAM:\tA fucking hobby! My trains! I knew it would be about those trains, you said you didn&#8217;t mind.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tI don&#8217;t. I think you look cute in your stationmaster&#8217;s hat. But you must understand, I need a hobby too?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tGood dialogue, guys.<br \/>\nSAM:\t[<em>Dismissing<\/em> JOHN <em>with a sneer.<\/em>] Shagging John is not a fucking hobby!<br \/>\n\t[JAYNE <em>cuddles up to<\/em> JOHN. JOHN <em>smiles.<\/em>]<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tI don&#8217;t actually shag John; it&#8217;s just a dream.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tHave you enough lemon in that, darling.<br \/>\nSAM:\tThat&#8217;s what he said. But your still thinking of shagging him, it&#8217;s just as bad.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tThat&#8217;s what I thought, Sam darling. But really, if you think about it\u2026 it&#8217;s not nearly as bad. A hobby, like Hannah says.<br \/>\nSAM:\tEnough of calling it a fucking hobby.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tKeep with the dialogue, Sammy boy. We&#8217;re getting there.<br \/>\nSAM:\tWe are getting fucking nowhere.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tLook darling. Can&#8217;t you see you&#8217;re blowing this out of proportion?<br \/>\nSAM:\tNot really, no. I can&#8217;t see that.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tOh come on Sam. Let&#8217;s leave it. You have to trust me. Why don&#8217;t we go home and have an early night.<br \/>\nJOHN:\t[<em>To<\/em> JAYNE.] Sounds like a good plan to me.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tI&#8217;ve got a little surprise for you: I went shopping today.<br \/>\nSAM:\tI&#8217;m not going anywhere. I&#8217;m having a bloody drink.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tWell I&#8217;m not sitting here arguing with you anymore over this silly misunderstanding. [<em>She downs her drink and stands.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tYeah? Well I&#8217;m sure you can go home to the garden shed and continue your little fucking hobby with John.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tIf you&#8217;re going to be like that: I just might.<br \/>\n\t[JOHN <em>shrugs.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tHurry along then. I&#8217;m sure you have all sorts of fun planned.<br \/>\n\t[<em>Everyone but<\/em> SAM <em>stands.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tSee; off with the little whore are we friend?<br \/>\nJOHN:\tGetting us another drink actually. [<em>To<\/em> JAYNE.] Would you like one, darling?<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tGo on then\u2026 don&#8217;t forget you have a present waiting at home. [<em>To<\/em> HANNAH.] Are you ok getting back?<br \/>\nSAM:\tShe&#8217;ll be fine.<br \/>\nHANNAH:\tI&#8217;ll be fine.<br \/>\n[HANNAH <em>exits left.<\/em> JOHN <em>exits right.<\/em> JAYNE <em>sits back down.<\/em> SAM <em>downs the remainder of his pint and looks at<\/em> JAYNE.]<br \/>\nSAM:\tI don&#8217;t know how you put up with it, sneaking off like this.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tJohn&#8217;s gone to get us drinks. Hannah&#8217;s gone home. John will be back as long as it takes the barman and what Hannah does in her own thoughts is her business.<br \/>\nSAM:\tBut she&#8217;s having an affair!<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tIt&#8217;s a meaningless fantasy. She loves you: believe me. She talked of nothing but you all the way through pilates tonight.<br \/>\nSAM:\tI wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if John&#8217;s broke a sweat when if he does come back, probably a quickie in the toilet, fucking disgusting, the guile.<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tSam, stop being so silly.<br \/>\n[JOHN <em>enters from right, with three new drinks. He sits down and kisses<\/em> JAYNE <em>on the cheek.<\/em> SAM <em>inspects him suspiciously.<\/em>]<br \/>\nSAM:\tBit too obvious to sneak off now, eh John?<br \/>\nJAYNE:\tSam&#8217;s insisting on being silly.<br \/>\nJOHN:\tSam, my good man, how do I make this clear. I have and will never actually sleep with your wife.<br \/>\nSAM:\tSo she just imagines it right?
