The Pistols gig has been much mythologised and it could have been an epiphany for everyone there. I doubt it though. My theory is that the true evolution of Manchester music can be traced back to the Iggy Pop gig at the Apollo with Bowie playing keyboards. Very little happened prior to that. Suddenly everyone with or without a story to tell was ready to turn that story into a three chord song.
