‘Rebellion Gives Me Hope’: An Interview with Sim Kern

I needed a break from all the awfulness. I started to realize that things may never get better in my lifetime, just worse and worse, but the fascists can’t keep me from creating a better world in my head. Writing anarchist utopian fiction is an act of rebellion. And I do think it’s one that can have a powerful real-world impact. They say it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, and for most people, that’s true. I didn’t realize how true it was for me until I read Ursula K Le Guin’s The Dispossessed. Solarpunk fiction sets out to disprove that idiom, to give folks a vision of a far better world, so we have a compass bearing to head towards.
