This time, the novel is set in the Republican College of Art (a veiled literary flip of the Royal College of Art) in the early 1960s, with David Hockney as the main protagonist, and R. B. Kitaj, Peter Blake and Pauline Boty among the supporting cast; so far, so David Lodge and Malcolm Bradbury. But this is Stewart Home remember, so — as in his Mandy, Charlie and Mary-Jane — Home reverses the polarity of the narrative, undermines the structure, rewrites cultural history in a collage of facts, pornography, simulations, sadomasochism, appropriation, political satire and jokes.
