The annual East End Film Festival takes place later this month. Opening night is taken up with a special screening of Bronco Bullfrog (1969), ahead of its BFI Flipside showing and DVD release in June. Director Barney Platts-Mills‘ steer was to “take a neighbourhood and make a film to represent or reflect that place by using the stories that emerged from the people’s experience and getting the people themselves to act them out in their natural locations”, in this case the Lower Lea Valley of Stratford and Canning Town. The end result is a rare cinematic outing for the shortlived suedehead subculture and a sharp soundtrack by The Audience.
Cathi Unsworth sends word of the Q&A she is chairing for the showing of Barry Adamson‘s debut short feature The Therapist (7.45pm on 27 April, at The Cole, 91 Hanbury Street, London E1 6QR: £7.50 in). Also showing is the Carl Barat-narrated documentary on the culture of London’s docks, The Rime of the Modern Mariner, and the premiere of the early 80s-set policing and politics drama SUS. It all takes place from 22-30 April.
