[12.7.05][Andrew Stevens] BLASPHEMOUS RUMOURS Maud Newton reminds us that on this day in 1977, those not inserting safety pins through their noses were bringing about prosecutions under obsolete legislation in what was surely one of the most egregious miscarriages of justice of the era.
On this day in 2005, a similar piece of pernicious legislation snook into Parliament via a convenient backdoor. I suspect it will take more than letters to Tony Blair from Ian McEwan* or protests by Salman Rushdie (for whom lawyers are already preparing a case on its assent) to prevent it from becoming law though.
