When Tom McCarthy read his International Necronautical Society classic Navigation Was Always a Difficult Art at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris on 15 February, the evening was disrupted by Alexander Brener and Barbara Schurz. Here, you can see the latter mooning the author, who later confided: “From where I was sitting you could see daylight at the other end”. McCarthy’s cult classic Remainder is taking the US by storm (where it is already in its 6th print run); a paperback edition will come out in Britain circa May/June and his second novel, Men in Space, has just been given a September release date. In spite of all this, the now legendary Tokyo ass-flash will remain for Tom “the moment I knew I’d made it culturally”.
